Conference Fellow 

The Fellows Program is one of the greatest annual professional development opportunities offered by the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling (TACAC) and is sponsored by the Inclusion, Access and Success committee. The program is designed to enable admission professionals who work with students from under-represented populations and who work in a setting adversely affected by budget cuts or limitations to participate in professional development opportunities.  

Recipients will receive:
  • Complimentary one-year individual TACAC membership
  • Complimentary conference registration fee
  • Complimentary two-night single occupancy hotel accommodations

Hotel & Parking

The cost for a double occupancy room with the TACAC room block is $189/night. Please note the conference room block is ONLY available once you are registered for Conference; no exceptions. The room block expires on Friday, March 11, 2022

Parking during the conference ranges from $26 overnight (self) to $49 (valet) and is subject to change.

Keynote Speaker (Sunday)

Dr. Terrell Strayhorn is Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor of Urban Education in the Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education at Virginia Union University, where he also serves as Director of the Center for the Study of HBCUs. An internationally-recognized education equity expert on issues of inclusion and belonging in corporate and education industries, Strayhorn’s research focuses on the social psychological determinants of student success for minoritized and other vulnerable populations. His pioneering research on college students’ sense of belonging has informed state policies, transformed campus/school practices, STEM contexts, and academic intervention testing. With over 15 years of professional experience as a university professor, college administrator, and publicly-engaged scholar, Strayhorn is Associate Editor of Social Sciences & Humanities, Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Education, Guest Editor of Education Sciences and author of 11 books and 150+ journal articles and reports. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Strayhorn is a faculty affiliate at Rutgers University’s Center for MSIs, Fellow of the AGB Leadership Institute, Member of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Freedom Schools Research Advisory Committee, and several other research institutes. He has been named one of the country’s top diversity scholars by Diverse Issues, “Top 20 to Know in Education,” and “Top 40 under 40,” by BusinessFirst, to name a few awards.

 Keynote Address (Monday)

Dr. Angel B. Pérez is CEO of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). In this role, he represents more than 25,000 admission and counseling professionals worldwide committed to postsecondary access and success. He is the primary voice of the association to government, media, and global partners. Pérez is recognized as a national thought leader and is a sought-after speaker on issues of educational equity, access, and success in American education.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Pérez has worked to realize his belief that diversity and academic excellence go hand-in-hand, and that every young person who aspires to higher education should have the opportunity to achieve. His work echoes his own story. Growing up poor in Puerto Rico and the South Bronx, he was the first in his family to graduate from college, and went on to become a leader in higher education. Recognized nationally on issues of equity and access in American education, Dr. Pérez is a tireless champion for underrepresented communities and a creative advocate for reform. Named by a Forbes article in 2019 as the most influential voice in college admission, he strives to build an educational ecosystem that better represents today’s society.

Prior to joining NACAC in July of 2020, Dr. Pérez served in secondary and higher education leadership positions across America, most recently, as Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success at Trinity College in Connecticut where his work was described as transformative. Since his arrival at NACAC, he has steered the organization through significant change as it strives to evolve to meet the needs of today's college admission profession. His leadership approach has been featured in several outlets, including the American Society for Association Executives.

Dr. Pérez's passion for teaching led him to serve as a faculty member at Trinity’s Educational Studies Department, UCLA’s College Counseling Certification Program, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In addition, he was a visiting international faculty member at Rikkyo University in Japan. He has served as a Trustee at the Berkshire School (MA), United World College in Costa Rica, Hartford Youth Scholars (CT), Tuition Exchange (DC), and was elected the youngest Chair of Diversity in the history of Skidmore College’s alumni association. He currently serves as a steering committee member for the Washington Higher Education Secretariat.

Dr. Pérez’s expertise has been sought by key policy influencers. In 2016, the Governor of Connecticut appointed him to the New England Board of Higher Education, and he was chosen by the Gates Foundation and NASFAA to serve on Forward50, a group of higher education leaders presenting solutions to Congress. He is a frequent contributor and commentator in media outlets, including the Washington Post, NPR, Forbes, The Atlantic, CBS Evening News, and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

He holds a B.S. from Skidmore College, an M.A. from Columbia University, a PhD from Claremont Graduate University, and a Teaching Certification in Higher Education Pedagogy from the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University.

Workday Keynote (Tuesday)

DJ Menifee is the Vice President for Enrollment at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. DJ has 14 years of admission/enrollment experience working with first-year, transfer, international and graduate populations while having served at regional and national liberal arts, a national private comprehensive, and regional public institutions.

As the Vice President for Enrollment, DJ leads an admission and student financial service division to support current and prospective students and their families through the admission, financial aid and student accounts process. In addition to serving on the president’s senior leadership team, the administrative leadership team, and university council, he actively serves as the university’s strategy and policy leader on all matters relating to student enrollment as it supports the overall university strategic plan.

DJ has presented at state, regional and national conferences in addition to virtual panels/webinars on admission, data-informed enrollment management, DEI initiatives across campus, leadership, middle management, multicultural recruitment, professional development, and strategic planning. He currently serves as a board director for the National Association for College Admissions Counseling and a member of EAB’s Enrollment Advisory Council.

DJ holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Lees-McRae College and a master’s in Instructional Design & Technology from Western Illinois University.

Are you looking to reinvent your career and get more involved with TACAC? New to the college admissions world and eager to meet other new admission professionals? After a two-year hiatus, the Mentorship Committee is excited to bring back the First Timers Session to this year’s conference as we reunite and welcome new professionals into our field!

During this pre-conference session, first-time TACAC attendees will have an opportunity to learn about navigating the conference, connect with TACAC leadership, and hear from NACAC representatives. It’s a perfect opportunity to start anew and find ways to get more involved with your career.

Diversity Peer Educator (DPE) Program: Modules 2 & 3
Sunday, April 3

This program offers secondary and post-secondary counselors of many academic disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and interests an increased leadership credential in multicultural counseling. Participants will engage in an immersive process on the foundations of multiculturalism, cultural competency, and social justice work, as well as application of learned skills to daily life experiences. The DPE program will provide an opportunity for counselors to become active participants in ally-ship and to become a part of a community of learners that support understanding, respect, and appreciation for all people.

Middle Management Institute
Sunday, April 3 from 9 AM - 3 PM

The TACAC Middle Management Institute (MMI) is a professional development program designed for both current and aspiring managers working in higher education. MMI program attendees can expect a rigorous curriculum built around dynamic educational sessions and collaborative learning experiences between program participants.

TACAC’s MMI commits to addressing three main themes from a managerial perspective each year:
  1. How we work with students in the college admissions profession
  2. How we work with other professionals
  3. How we work on ourselves both personally and professionally
The session will include a luncheon and will be offered to conference registrants for only $100. For more information, contact the MMI Co-chairs.

Reimagine our collaborations in San Antonio and connect at the Counselor Card Swap! This is a great time for high school counselors and college representatives to connect…IN PERSON! 

We are all interested in helping students with post-secondary education so why wait. Colleges and universities can sign up to participate in their annual conference registration. We hope you mingle and gain new contacts from this event. For our high school counselors, you are able to show up and begin networking.

Cancellation, Payment, and Substitution Policy

  • Payment is due upon receipt and may be made by check or credit card only; purchase orders are not accepted. Checks should be made payable to TACAC and sent to the address on the invoice. Click here for TACAC's W-9.
  • All payments must be received by March 18, 2022. Unpaid registrations by March 18, 2022, may be canceled and attendees must re-register if space allows.
  • Requests for cancellations or substitutions must be submitted via email to [email protected]
  • All refunds will incur a $15 processing fee per registrant.
  • Cancellation Schedule (based on date cancellation received):
    - Full Refund (less processing fee): October 4, 2021 - January 31, 2022
    - Half Refund (less processing fee): February 1 - March 13, 2022
    - No Refunds will be issued after March 13, 2022
  • Substitution requests must be submitted by March 13, 2022.
  • Registrants who do not attend the conference (no-show) will not receive a refund and outstanding invoices will remain due. No exceptions
