Diversity Peer Educator Program

TACAC’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access Committee is offering a Diversity Peer Educator (DPE) Program. This program offers secondary and post-secondary counselors of many academic disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and interests an increased leadership credential in multicultural counseling. Participants will engage in an immersive process on the foundations of multiculturalism, cultural competency, and social justice work, as well as application of learned skills to daily life experiences. The DPE program will provide an opportunity for counselors to become active participants in ally-ship and to become a part of a community of learners that support understanding, respect, and appreciation for all people.

As a result of attending and completing Module 1, participants will:

  • Engage in personal awareness of how social identity influences/influenced their daily lives
  • Examine how implicit bias and prejudice manifest in our daily lives
  • Develop a personal action plan for extending one’s cultural awareness based on implicit bias(es) or identified area for cultural awareness growth
  • Discuss institutional and structural issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Identify areas within one’s institutional recruiting and admissions process/team in need of enhancement for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Develop a plan for enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion for institutional recruiting and admissions processes
  • Examine social media and technological infrastructure/plans related to diversity, equity, and inclusion

The nature of the session requires examination of the systems in which each of us is immersed, as well as examination of those systems and institutions that we, as higher education practitioners, must strive to understand and transform. As a result of attending and completing Module 3, participants will:
  • Explore social justice and oppression based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, (dis)ability status, and social class.
  • Review models for intergroup relations; the historical context of group relations; and cultural variables significant to ethnic, racial and culturally oppressed groups.
  • Examine social, political, and cultural processes as they affect intergroup and intragroup relations.
  • Participate in cross cultural dialogue and critical reflection and some skills development.
